Mitchell & Ness After the 1957 season the New York Giants evacuated Coogan's Bluff (the Polo Grounds) and joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in their pursuit to bring Major League baseball to the west coast. While awaiting the construction of their new stadium, the San Francisco Giants played in Seals Stadium. On April 12, 1960, the Giants moved into Candlestick Park, their new home. Candlestick Park was named after the candlestick bird, which is a long, thin legged bird that once heavily occupied the bay area. In 1962, the New York Mets replaced the void left behind by the National League Dodgers and Giants. In their uniform, the Mets incorporated the colors of both the Dodgers and Giants. The San Francisco Giants captured the National League Pennant by holding a one game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Willie McCovey, who played outfield before making the position change to first base, helped the Giants reach the World Series against their once neighbors, the New York Yankees.
