Mitchell & Ness In 1969 the National League expanded into Canada with the formation of the Montreal Expos. Seven years earlier, the New York Mets joined the National League as one of the first expansion teams. Entering the 1969 season, the Mets had yet to post a winning record as Nolan Ryan, a young pitcher from the Lone Star State, began his second full season with the club. Ryan, who became known for his strikeouts and no hitters, started 10 games for the Mets compiling a 6-3 record. Not only did the Mets have a winning season, but they also defeated the Western Division Champion Atlanta Braves for the National League pennant. Entering the World Series agianst the Baltimaore Orioles, the Mets appeared to be heavily overmatched. However, in just five games the Orioles succumbed to the Mets, who ended their first winning season with a World Series title....
